When I first started Dahn Yoga, I had all kinds of preconceptions about the teachers.

First of all, all my instructors were Korean, so that was enough to spark my misconceptions about mystical woo-woo. However, as I got to know them better, and felt the essence of what they were trying to teach me, I forgot about our differences and instead just marveled at the experience of learning what they could teach me.

I don’t regret it.

Dahn Yoga Tip 1

Breath control refers to breathing evenly and naturally, according to one's own lung capacity. When we first practice Ki-gong, we breathe the most comfortably and naturally. In the case of beginners, focusing too much attention on breathing actually prevents relaxation of the muscles and internal organs. Rather than trying too hard to breathe deeply, the practicioner should breathe naturally, quietly, and calmly, without really thinking about it. Deep, even breathing takes place later, once a person reaches a higher level.

Mind control means governing Ki by focusing and controlling awareness. Learning how to control Ki, ultimately, is learning how to control the mind. To achieve mind control, we must first free our mind of busy thoughts. For people first beginning this practice, sitting quietly, emptying the mind of busy thoughts and concentrating the awareness is not easy. This is the Jung-gong approach. Dong-gong, in which the practitioner assumes specific postures and concentrates his or her awareness on movement and breathing, is much more effective for freeing the mind of busy thoughts and achieving unity of body and consciousness to reach a state free from all ideas and thoughts.
